I presume it's protection of the optic. There's a lot of info at http://www.bellrock.org.uk/lighthouse/ but I could not find anything about it, so I don't know if it is against stones, birds or anything else. The website is worth exploring.

As far as I know it has two purposes

1) Stop birds flying into lantern

2)More important stop birds perching on different ledges etc.
No longer any keepers to clear mess?

No one knows how many humdingers
