Wow! 8O That is spectacular! You're right about the unusual location. One would expect to find it ON the cliff and not below it!

Belle Toute Lighthouse used to be on the cliff top,but was discontinued due to being frequently shrouded in mist and Beachy Head lighthouse was subsequently built.

There's a similar situation in New Zealand at Pencarrow Head. The light on the hill is non operative but the one on the beach still functions. Fog was also the problem here.:

The chaulk cliffs rise as high as 530 feet above sea level at Beachy Head. The light tower is about 150 feet high.

I thought this was a really great photo showing the cliff and the lighthouse below. One heck of a contrast to lights on the Outer Banks.
