...about this structure? Or anyone who may know.


Was it a lighthouse of some sort at some time?

I would say it was definitely a lighthouse. The blurb below the photo mentions Cornwallis on the Hawkesbury River. This river starts near Windsor which is West of Sydney and empties into the ocean at Pittwater which is North of Sydney. The Hawkesbury, which is quite a large river was used by shipping to carry supplies all the way to Windsor and points along the way. The lighthouse was probably on a bend in the river and was designed to prevent ships from running into that cliff in the background.

The black on the tower looks as though it may have been burnt in a bush fire at some stage as they are very common in that area but I would be more inclined to think it is black soot or powder from the gum trees as it seems to be coming from the top down. It was also electrified at some stage as you can see three terminals to the right of the window, for positive, negative and earth at 240 volts AC.
