From the e-travel blackboard ...

Britain’s best sea views used to be reserved for lighthouse keepers. Now, their former homes, carefully refurbished keepers’ cottages in 12 locations around the coast, mean that holidaymakers can enjoy the same panoramic views and healthy sea air.

The properties, redundant thanks to the automation of lighthouses over the last 20 years, have a new life as holiday homes under the banner of long established home rental agency Rural Retreats. Each cottage has been furnished by an interior designer – some up to tourist board five-star standard - the largest sleeping six (from £721 per week) and the smallest a ‘bolt hole’ for just two people (from £453). Short breaks, for a minimum of two nights, are also available all year. Many of the properties are more than one hundred years old and offer some of the most romantic locations around UK shores: from Pendeen in Cornwall to Whitby in North Yorkshire.
