I was asked to pass around this open letter anywhere it might help. This is as good a place as any. I trust we have some Canadians among us?

OPEN LETTER TO CANADIAN CITIZENS FROM LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS

Once again, government bureaucrats are attempting to remove the services of Lightkeepers from the Canadian people. They are working quickly to implement a plan to de-staff the remaining 27staffed lightstations on the west coast and the remaining 9 on the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Assistant Commissioner of Coast Guard, by continuing to refer to these stations as ‘automated’, is attempting to lead the public to believe that the stations being de-staffed are automated already and that it is only a matter of removing the Lightkeepers. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Lightkeepers have been key players in public safety for over a century and their efforts continue to be held in high regard by the Marine and Aviation communities on both coasts. This is not romanticism. It reflects reality. The services that the Keepers perform are professional and extensive and there simply is no reliable way, even in this day, to replace them with automated equipment.
Their weather observations have a positive impact in both the prevention of incidents and the success of rescue efforts when incidents occur. They help in the accuracy of forecasting and assist the timely flow of goods and passengers along the waterways of both coasts. There have been numerous attempts to duplicate these observations by a variety of equipment and all have fallen miserably short.

Lightkeepers continue to assist in Search and Rescue, provide sanctuary, act as first aid outposts, relay warnings and distress calls, liaise with RCMP, Fisheries, Pollution Control and other government agencies, and we help to ensure Canada’s sovereignty and security by establishing a strong federal presence on our coastlines. Our jobs are not limited to this list. We protect these, your public assets, the gems of your coasts, the Lighthouses.

Our concern is not for our jobs. It is for the continuation of the service that Canadians want, expect, and deserve to have.

Call and write your representatives.

Respectfully,
Steve Bergh – President BC Lightkeepers Local 20232 PSAC

It would be a shame to lose the last lighthouse keepers. The comments are so right, how could a computer ever 'see' people in distress and launch a boat to help them?????????

Local Council wants Keepers ... From Westerly News

COUNCIL SUPPORTS LIGHTKEEPERS BY SAYING NO TO DE-STAFFING VIA LETTER

Tofino council doesn't want to see lighthouses on B.C.'s coast de-staffed and voted Tuesday to send a letter to the Canadian Coast Guard commissioner to express opposition to the government's cost-cutting method.

Their letter is meant to voice support for a resolution the Strathcona Regional District will vote on today.

The SRD will then present its resolute support for keeping lighthouse staff in B.C. lighthouses at the upcoming Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) convention in October.

The resolution calls on Prime Minister Stephen Harper "to cease all efforts to de-staff light stations and instead commit to maintaining light station staffing levels indefinitely" to ensure safety and the growth of the coastal economy.

Four lighthouses are slated for de-staffing along B.C.'s coast in the near future: Trial Island, Gabriola Island, Dryad Point and Cape Mudge. More are expected in the second phase.

B.C. has 27 lighthouses.

The de-staffing of lighthouses on Canadian coasts has been a controversial issue since 1985 when the government began questioning the need for it. In 1998 the de-staffing program was halted following strong opposition.

Another Council asked for support ... also from Westerly News

COUNCIL SUPPORTS KEEPING LIGHTKEEPERS

Ucluelet council received a letter from the president of the BC Lightkeepers union, asking it to support their stance that lighthouses in B.C. should be staffed.

Recently the federal government has said it intends to de-staff lighthouses on coasts across Canada in an effort to save money.

Council voted to receive the letter for information only, stating they had already sent a letter to the Canadian Coast Guard on the matter.
