Excellent, excellent, excellent news, and a great article by the Milwaukee JS to boot. I wish the city the best of luck in a process I'm sure it can succeed in.

Noah ...

Im staring at this picture looking at how there appears to be a boarded up area on a level of a second floor ... and thinking of the Michigan lake lights ... and wondering that there MUST have been a catwalk there at one time?

I wonder in time if they will rebuild the catwalk.

I'm counting only 8 locations on the lakes (U.S. side) that still has their catwalks.........

Sturgeon Bay North Pier, Algoma, Indiana Harbor, Michigan City, St. Joseph, South Haven, Grand Haven, & Manistee...All on Lake Michigan.....

I know in some instances that public support had to be raised to save their catwalks, but don't know if an entire catwalk was ever replicated and installed -- Maybe Terry could answer that one......

It would sure look nice if that were to happen.....And we can all hope Kewaunee is successful in the acquisition of their light -- Anything to keep PETA away from it..... 8)

I personally see no need to reconstruct the catwalk. When it comes to reconstructions I've always felt that one walks a very fine line when that money could be used to preserve actual historic structures elsewhere.

Chuck, you are correct - no catwalks have been reconstructed - all are original units.

I should have added, "after the current structure is restored", would they rebuild the cat walk.

A good step in a positive direction. While they are waiting for Dept. of Interior approval, might be time to form a volunteer group to help caretake the lighthouse on the city's behalf, if there is not one already....I saw no mention in the stories of one. Such a group would be in a better position to perhaps solicit funds for the Lighthouse for restoration and upkeep.
