Once the lighthouse is fully restored by the end of 2010, visitors will be able to view the newly restored lighting fixtures as they climb the spiral staircase for the first time in decades.

It's really happy to finally see the work being done. I feel like I've been waiting on this one for years and years.

It's good to see it getting done, but the funding seems to come a little easier for the lights like this. I wish the government would back us up here.

Easy he says. Ha ha ha ha ha ha, they've been trying for over a decade to get the money to do this work. Do you know how many times the funds were put into then cut out of the park service budget? Add another 20 years of talking about needing the work done before that. I can remember as a child the park rangers talking about wanting funds to restore Bodie Island.

Yes I do, I was in OBLHS for a while, that's a long laughable story for another day.

That doesn't change my opinion of some lighthouse groups having better luck than others. In relative terms, it was easier, because the money is there now. Others still don't have it that have been trying longer, and the little money they do get is criticized as wasteful government spending. Bodie, like Nubble, Split Rock, and others that are more in the face of the general public tend to garner a bit more sympathy.

Nonetheless, I'm glad it's being worked on, it definitely deserves the attention.

Ross, I do not disagree with you that some groups do seem to get funding easier than others.

It helps that the lights along the Outer Banks are seen by the local populace as a source of tourism. That does help keep down the complaints about wasteful government spending. :)

My thing is that Bodie Island has always played second fiddle to Cape Hatteras. It seemed that getting funds for Bodie Island was about as easy as doing dental work on a mad Gator. Whereas it seemed that Cape Hatteras could get anything any time when it came to funds.

That it has, all the NC lights stand in the shadow of Hatteras.
