"Federal stimulus funds covered the cost of having the exterior of the lighthouse restored. That work was completed earlier this year. The lighthouse, which was in commission from 1887 until 1941, is the only remaining square screw-pile lighthouse in existence in the United States, according to the U.S. Coast Guard Historian’s Office."

Is this true ? I thought there were others.... :?:

It might be though! I cant think of any others except Roanoke Marshes, which is a replica, so that wouldn't count.

Well believe it or not there is another original square screw pile lighthouse out there and it is also in NC. Back in 1920 the old "North River Lighthouse" (built in 1866) was moved to the village of Chicamacomico. Chicamacomico is today known as Rodanthe. There the lighthouse was used as the village school house from 1920 until 1951. It is now used as the village community center. However over the years so many additions and changes have been made to the building it is all but impossible to find the part that was the original lighthouse.

That's some story, Eric ! I was thinking after reading it that it would be so neat if they could install a replica lanteren room to reclaim the building's past heritage. :)
