"Grand River West" ???

This is how this name confusion stuff gets started........

"The "Grand River-west lighthouse" designation is used because people have confused it with the lighthouse that is actually found in Fairport Harbor when the term "Fairport Harbor lighthouse" is applied. By noting it as being found on the west breakwater at the mouth of the Grand River the structure is better identified and helps to avoid confusion as to where the two lighthouses are, in fact, located."

This light I have always seen referenced as "Fairport Harbor West Breakwater" light........

Can I get a ruling from Terry on it's "Official" name ?

Chuck – you are absolutely correct - it’s a case of lousy reporting.

The official GSA listing with an opening date of 08/16/2010 clearly states that the structure to be auctioned is the Fairport Harbor West Breakwater light. You can check the listing out at: http://www.auctionrp.com/Property_details.cfm?id=1198

The fact is that I have never come across a listing for a lighthouse known as Grand River West. Looking back at some Light Lists for the Great Lakes, I found the following:

For 1885 and 1914, the only listings for “Grand” in the index are Grand Haven, Grand Island, Grand Marais and Grand Traverse. The 2010 Light List index has a number of entries for “Grand River” but they are all buoys in the Grand River which dumps into Lake Michigan at Grand Haven.

Fire the reporter – case closed!

I thought something was Hinky when I read that....Is this another 'End Of The Road' ?

In an earlier article (July 20), this same reporter also referred to the light as 'Grand River West'....I'm wondering if this is just him, or has this become a 'Local Re-Naming' ?

http://www.news-herald.com/articles/2010/07/20/news/doc4c4489fe31b8b580371837.txt

Further imformation from the entry on Lighthouse Friends, which identifies the light with it's proper name (Fairport Harbor West Breakwater), but cites this same author as a reference.....

In 2005, the Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse, deemed excess by the Coast Guard, was offered at no cost to eligible entities, including federal, state, and local agencies, non-profit corporations, and educational organizations under the provisions of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. The application period was extended, but no qualified taker was found, so the lighthouse was auctioned off by the General Services Administration. The auction began on September 28, 2009 and closed a month later on October 29, after ten bids were received by six different parties, with the winning bid of $77,000 being submitted by "samsloan." The winner was identified shortly thereafter as 87-year-old Mentor construction magnate Jerome Osborne, who apparently has a reputation for purchasing and restoring historic properties in the area.

In July of 2010, the General Services Administration declared Osborne’s purchase to be in default because he did not obtain a lease to use the federal breakwater adjoining the lighthouse. Osborne will lose his $10,000 deposit, and the lighthouse will be auctioned off again.

“Osborne defaults on lighthouse purchase,” Jeffrey L. Frischkorn, The News-Herald, July 20, 2010.

Esther and I were there a week ago and also this past Sunday - we went back so we could climb the Grand river Lighthouse and take a walk through the museum as well.
