Why would they consider not to renovate them? Any historic building is worth renovating (even if it has nothing to do with a lighthouse).

The answer is simple - LACK OF FUNDS! Grosse Point already has a planned $200,000 expenditure to work on the upper third of the tower in 2011. It's an unfortunate fact of life that with our failing economy funding for lighthouse preservation is getting harder and harder to come by.
