Hi Barry,

Things are shaping up for another big weekend this year. I'm expecting around 450 entries by 20 the August.
I have spent quite a bit of time updating the web site and this time I am featuring endangered lighthouses which is one of the main objectives of the weekend. Our own Gary Martin has provided me with several good panoramic shots of dilapidated lights and these are being featured on the main page at http://illw.net

Nice to see you keeping up with the growth of the event. The guy who writes the Southgate articles for me is a good mate in Melbourne.

It has taken many years to gain acceptance of the ILLW by local government organisations and others who look after lighthouses but at last the event is being recognized for its main objective and that is to make people aware of the plight of endangered lighthouses. This article came out of left field:-

This year we are activating Alleppyee Lighthouse which is soon becoming 150 years and are in process of getting the special callsign and permissions. We are expected to be on the air from 6th to 16th August 2011. de Lion Ajoy VU2JHM

Hi Lion,

6th -16th August is too early for the ILLW which is a shame. The event is 20-21 August. It is always held on the 3rd full weekend of that month.

Just on official start time I have 464 entries from 54 countries. An all time record in both totals. 80 from USA followed by 66 from Australia which percentage wise is a fantastic result for a country with only 400 lighthouses.
There are also several lighthouses around the world celebrating International Lighthouse day on Sunday. The media will be present at some of these so the publicity will be great for our favourite structures.

For those who have been following the progress of the ILLW event for 2011, I am really pleased to report that it was the best result since the event started all those years ago. We had 469 lighthouses on the air in 55 countries with USA and Australia in the lead.
Atmospheric condition were a lot better than previous years so many more long distance contacts were made.
The objective of the weekend was met in quite a few places with media presence and decommissioned lighthouses being relit on the Saturday night. Two lighthouse in Western Australia were lit up in pink to raise money for breast cancer treatment.
On the technical side for the nerdies, the bandwidth for the month of August so far has exceeded 10gbs. The hit counter recorded over 1 million hits and the site made first place again on the Top 25 Lighthouse web site.
Reports from some entrants and photos can be seen on the web site as well as the Facebook page which has been quite busy.
I have over 40 entrants who have registered for next year already. Some fear they will lose their lighthouse if they don't get in early.
