Renovation at St. Joseph

A forum to discuss lighthouses in the US Great Lakes Region
(Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and the lake lighthouses of New York & Pennsylvania)

Made a quick day trip today to see some of the southwestern Michigan lights. The outer structure at St. Joseph is completely surrounded by scaffolding, so they're obviously doing some work on it. The outer lights at St. Joseph and Grand Haven, as well as the South Haven light are already covered with a lot of ice. These structures truly take beatings year to year.

Noah had a thread about this...........

http://www.lighthousing.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8405

Noah Also found a page from The contractor, Bayshore Contractors, LLC, last July.....

http://www.gobayshore.com/index.php/restortation-work.html?vsig24_0=2

And Text from their website:

"Restortation Work:U.S. Coastguard contract for restoration of the historic north pier head lighthouse in St. Joseph, Michigan. Restoration required to meet historic society authenticity specifications. BayShore was the General Contractor over construction on this project. Our services included: cutting and removing all concrete from the base of the lighthouse; installing of reinforcement jacks for strength and stabilization; constructing a new concrete base incorporating the reinforcement jacks and new rebar; anchoring the new concrete base to existing concrete pier and lighthouse; removing steel upper deck grating and installing new fiberglass grating; installing the fog signal and detector; installing navigation aids (coordinated with the Coast Guard in Muskegon); sealing (welding shut) the upper tower door and portholes; replacing all glazing in the upper cupola/ lantern area utilizing the existing brass bead material (trim); and cleaning and painting the entire lighthouse both inside and outside to detailed specifications. This project is current and scheduled for completion in spring 2010.”

Looks like they're just a bit late in finishing.....

It is quite a site, Grover, although I'm sure even more spectacular in January. Here are a couple more from yesterday.
