10 million seems a hell of a lot to restore a lighthouse.

This lighthouse was automated in 1974, thus also ending any serious preventive maintenance. In 2001 structural items, bricks and iron, fell from the tower causing concerns. In 2005 ownership was transferred to the California State Parks and to the enthusiastic acclaim by the San Fransisco Chronicle "Historic beacon's future looks bright with state takeover."

This light tower was in need of immediate attention when CSP gained ownership but since then apparently little has been done to repair, let alone to restore the tower and in the seven years since costs of such escalated significantly. The state is now essentially flat broke. Now this historic beacon's future looks dim.

Ten million is a hefty price tag but the cost of doing about anything in CA is exorbitant with the current costly work rules and costly state mandated benefits and pensions.

The plan now is to remove and restore the lens but it is highly unlikely that the lens will return to the top of this tower to again to serve only to be illuminated once a year ito coincide with the date of first illumination in November of 1874.

Thanks for that link, Grover.

I met that kite-photograhper in August when I visited Pigeon Point. There aren't too many of us who do kite aerial photography ( KAP ), and up until the time I met Jeff, I had never met another KAPer in person.

I remember him saying he either was given - or got a really good deal - on the fish-eye lens he uses to get those wonderful shots.

Good for Jeff!
