Sorta seems a shame, don't it, since the previous bidder took so much trouble to get out there...

Gary Zaremba visited the Conneaut Lighthouse during the spring of 2009, and when he was unable to find a boat to take him out to his light, he waded across the harbor, scaled the detached breakwater, and walked out to the tower. Calling the acquisition of the lighthouse "a fun, interesting opportunity," Zaremba planned to open the structure to guided tours and believed that some day he may offer overnight stays in the lighthouse, whose first and second floors are the size of an average living room.

However, I'm sure the light will be in good hands with the Port Authority. They may not offer tours and lodging, but they should be up to maintaining the structure......

In June, members were ferried to the lighthouse and, using a system of internal ladders, examined every level of the light, which became operational in 1936. Members were generally impressed with its condition.

The port authority has done plenty of research to gauge how much it would cost to maintain and insure the lighthouse.

“We’ve taken the proper approach,” Belnap said. “I feel satisfied that we explored every avenue. It’s something the port authority can handle, and we would not be overwhelmed with responsibility.”

The 1930s-era Conneaut Harbor West Breakwater Light now belongs to Jerry Killilea Jr. of Orient, in central Ohio.

He won the property Aug. 5 with a bid of $46,000 through an online auction administered by the federal General Services Administration.

Wondered what happened to this. Thanks, Barry.

A "Large Extended Family", Eh ? Wonder if he can fit 'em all in there.
