From: December 1941: 31 Days that Changed America and Saved the World

The Flying Santa, a pilot who flew Christmas gifts each year to lonely lighthouse keepers and their families up and down the New England coast was grounded by the Navy for fear he might he might be mistaken for an enemy plan and shot down

At the last minute they relented, realizing they had gone to far, and the Flying Santa was airborne again, spreading goodwill and cheer up and down the coast.
